Waiting On Wednesday (7): Leviathan - Scott Westerfeld

Waiting On Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Yep, I'm aware that at time of posting, it's not technically Wednesday. Well not here in the UK, at least. But I probably won't be able to post while it's technically Wednesday, and actually I have no clue how to schedule posts. Yay! ignorance.

This week I'm waiting on...

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld.

It is the cusp of World War I, and all the European powers are arming up. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet.

Aleksandar Ferdinand, prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battle-torn Stormwalker and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, a girl disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She's a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With the Great War brewing, Alek's and Deryn's paths cross in the most unexpected way...taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure. One that will change both their lives forever.

Alternate history. Airships. Girl dressed as a boy to get into the Air Service. Steampunk! What's not to like?

This just sounds so darn different from any other YA out there right now. And it's out October 6th in the UK and the US, so not too long to wait for this one.

I'm really excited to read this! Nice pick. It's really easy to schedule posts. Here's one site that helped me figure it out:http://buzz.blogger.com/2008/05/blogger-now-schedules-future-dated.html

So for some reason I've been avoiding this book. I'm not very taken with Westerfeld even though everyone else seems to adore him, but you have such wicked taste and all so I *had* to click over. Hmmm, mildly interested. I'm a bit World Warred out right now, though. Yes I KNOW I'm reading WWZ, but that's different!

Excellent pick! I'm looking forward to this book, too. I didn't care for Westerfield's "Peeps" but I really enjoyed "Uglies."

Kelsey - thanks for the tip. That'll come in really useful for when I go on holidays and stuff.

Rhiannon - I adore Westerfeld for the Midnighters trilogy. What I like about his books is that they're always so different from each other. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from this one, which is what I love about him!

And prophecygirl's mention of the illustrations has me intrigued too.
