In My Mailbox (15)

In My Mailbox is hosted by Kristi of The Story Siren. I like to think of it as the YA blogger community's version of a weekly Bookaholics Anonymous meeting. Except, none of us are admitting we have a problem.

Bought:

Airhead - Meg Cabot

From book cover: Emerson and Nikki have absolutely nothing in common. Emerson's a tomboy-superbrain who couldn't care less about her looks. Nikki's a supermodel sensation, and the world's most famous airhead. But a freak accident causes the girls' lives to collide in the most extraordinary way...

Recently, I realised belatedly that I'd missed the memo everyone else got about how Meg Cabot is wicked fun. Why didn't y'all tell me?!

Anyway, I thought I'd start with the Airhead series. Apparently the story involves a brain transplant. Good thing.

Gift:

Extreme Kissing - Luisa Plaja

From book cover: Bethany is the sensible one with a long-term boyfriend, Carlota is the rebellious one with the wild past. All is fine in their world - except Carlota hates her stepdad and longs for her ex. And Bethany is worried that her boyfriend is about to dump her - and she's 'late'...

Carlota has a plan to put their troubles behind them on a crazy day out in London. She uses her favourite magazine to guide them on a life-changing adventure - setting real challenges from the glossy pages that lead to exclusive shopping, exciting snogging and... explosive secrets. The magazine will take them anywhere they need to go - but will it make them reveal the truths they are keeping from each other?

I loved Luisa Plaja's book Split By A Kiss, so I'm way excited about Extreme Kissing. Don't you love it when you read a book by an author you've never tried before, totally adore it, and they already have other books out? I do.

(This one was a present from an awesome person. Big thanks, awesome person.)

For review:

Wake - Lisa McMann

Summary from Amazon: Not all dreams are sweet.

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does -- they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can't control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant....

If I were the kind of girl who got overexcited about books, I'd squee right now. Oh wait... I so am that kind of girl. Squee. And: cute, cute, cute UK cover.

Ice - Sarah Beth Durst

Summary from publisher's website: When Cassie was little her grandmother would tell her stories about the Arctic… stories about snow and ice, about a beautiful castle made of ice, and about her mother, who made a deal with the Polar Bear King and was swept away to the ends of the earth to become a prisoner of the trolls.

Cassie is older now and has no time for fairytales and
talking animals, or lies about her dead mother. Living with her father at the Arctic research centre, she is determined to become a leading scientist and researcher. But when Cassie comes face to face with a mysterious polar bear, one that defies all scientific fact or knowledge, she begins realise that the fairytales could actually be true.

Armed with the knowledge that her mother might be alive, Cassie makes a deal with the Polar Bear King, and embarks on a dangerous journey against time to save her. But her agreement with the Polar Bear King comes with consequences she never bargained for, and before her journey's end Cassie will discover the true meaning of love and family, and loss.

You know what? I loved the sound of this one before I'd ever read a single review, but since the reviews starting going up I've become even more intrigued. Why? Because it sounds so darn strange. And I mean that in a good way. In fact, for future reference, I always mean strange in a good way.

Leviathan - Scott Westerfeld

Summary from Goodreads: Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She's a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn's paths cross in the most unexpected way…taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.

Alternate history! Steampunk! A girl who's a brilliant airman! All excellent reasons for reading this book, I'm sure you'll agree.

(Thanks to Simon and Schuster UK for sending me review copies of these. You rock.)

So, another happy week for me. I'm looking forward to reading each and every one of these. Now... what did everyone else get?

I think that is a totally brilliant stack of books to get through. I'm loving your opening lines. We should at some point consider going to get some help with our bookish obsession! Until then, I'll just be reading your reviews and deciding which boks I should buy.
