It is a truth universally acknowledged that a blogger in possession of a shiny new post, must be in want of a comment.
Isn't it?
Sure, most of us blog because we like expressing ourselves. For me, it's all about writing reviews. I like distilling my thoughts about the books I've read and choosing exactly the right word to convey a thought or emotion.
But most of us don't blog in a vacuum. One of the best things about being a YA book blogger is the community. I'm talking about the debate, the exchange of ideas, and appreciation for each other's work that makes the YA blogosphere a buzzy place to be.
And yet, I consistently fail at commenting. I read way more blogs than I regularly comment on. And when I talk to other bloggers, they often say the same thing. If we're pushed for time, commenting is the first thing to go.
So, if you're someone who likes getting comments, you probably want to make it as easy as possible for readers to leave them. Which brings me to a quandry: the dreaded word verification.
Since I started blogging, I've wavered on this. First I had it. Then last year I got brave, and figured since so many people hate those pesky little captchas, I'd get rid of the thing. For a while it was fine, but then the spammers discovered a couple of my posts and I felt like I was constantly on patrol, trying to delete the stuff. So I switched the word verification on again, and it's back under control.
Personally, while I don't enjoy word verification, it won't put me off leaving a comment. I know that some people hate word verification with the burning intensity of a thousand suns. And I see their point. It's time consuming, especially when you get the word wrong and have to take a second (or third) shot at it. But if I've got something to say, I'll say it, even if it means squinting at the screen trying to work out if that's a capital I or a lower case l or a number 1 I'm meant to be typing into the box before the darn thing times out. However, if I'm honest, on blogs which have that two stage version where I write my comment and press enter and then the captcha comes up... it's not unheard of for me to click away without realising I have to verify. Duh.
Now, I'm not especially convinced that I got more comments when the word verification was switched off. I think I get the most comments when I review a book a lot of people are interested in, which stands to reason. I'm also pretty sure that the more comments I leave on other blogs, the more other bloggers leave me. Some people make a real effort to 'return' comments, and I appreciate that. Still, if there are people out there thinking of a response and then not leaving it because the word verification irritates, inconveniences or straight up enrages them... that's a pity.
I could turn word verification off, but change my settings so that I have to approve every comment before it's published. That would give me greater control over spam without putting potential commenters off. Super. But for discussion posts? Well, unless I'm going to be sat permanently in front of my laptop poised to approve any comments as they come in, it kind of defeats the object.
So tell me: what's your preference? Do you hate word verification? Do you personally approve all your comments? How's it working for you?

Look at me! The first to comment! Okay, personally I HATE word verification but I won't let it stop me from leaving comments. If I see a type of blog were I have to fill name, email, website etc. before leaving a comment I probably won't (sorry). I used to get a LOT of annoying spam comments but between accepting registered users only comments and Bloggers new spam control I haven't had any in a long time. I don't have to approve comments either.
I am probably one of the worst blog lurkers EVER! I'm trying to be better at commenting because even though I write the reviews for students, other librarians and book lovers its still nice to get a comment once in a while!
Thanks for the great post!
I, like you, only have a few blogs that I regularly comment on - not through lack of stuff to say, but through lack of time.
I've never used word verification but do have comment approval, which works for me. I've never had any spam and like reading my comments as they come in. I don't do many discussion posts but don't feel that having to approve comments would particularly hinder any discussion going on in the comments. I could be completely wrong there, but surely a quick check of your email every couple of hours would be enough to keep things rolling?
Oh, and the word verification, while vaguely irritating (especially the two phase version) wouldn't stop me commenting if I had something I wanted to say. As I have just illustrated. Twice, no less.
I don't have a preference either way.
I took word verification off mine and approve comments on posts that are older than seven days and find that this catches pretty much all the spam without me having to police it that much. I just spam them instead of publishing them.
I don't let word verification stop me from commenting and even gain some entertainment value at times from some of the words that come up. One author said that they used word verification to name random objects in their novel so it's for to be good for something!
I have to say that I've been thinking about this lately and a couple of weeks ago, I made the decision to turn it off on my blog. Have I had more comments? Maybe but I also got spammed. Thankfully it was only once so I'm keeping it off for now.
I find blogger tends to pick up most of the spam for me. I am at my computer most of the day, so I am happy to review them before posting. If someone asks me a specific question, I may go to email or hope that they pressed all replies to the post. Word verification doesn't reall both me.
I'm rubbish at word verification! I think I'm a bit word-verification-blind. So, yes, there have been times when I've given up on an attempted comment. I usually give it a good go first, though, and it will never put me off trying!
I don't use word verification on Chicklish and just 'report spam' when it comes in.
See, I managed it that time! And I'll do it again... :)
I've been blogging for almost a year and have never had word verification. However, I've also never had a problem with spam. In fact, I don't think I've really ever had any on blog posts - strange I know.
Word verification doesn't put me off commenting if I really liked the post.
I didn't even know you could turn off word verification LOL.
I don't comment on a lot on blogs and actually get very few comments on my own, despite a lot of hits according to my stats. That's just the way it goes, I don't mind.
I have to say word verification doesn't bother me, if I really want to write something I will, like now :0)
I used to have word vertification, but got rid of it after one too many times getting the word wrong the first time when commenting on other blogs. If it's spammed, spam can be deleted. But I see the points to both preferences. Vertification doesn't put me off commenting or anything, though.
Thanks to everyone for braving the word verification... especially Splendibird and Luisa for managing it *twice*. :D It's really encouraging that you all will still comment if you want.
I think if I were able to spend more time on the computer I'd be happier to turn the verification off. I'm a bit of a control freak, I guess.
I'm interested in this 'registered users only' option, though. I'll definitely have a look into doing that, since I *think* I generally get comments from registered users only anyway.
I turned it off on my blog...I've found that I have two fairly old entries that are spammed once or twice a week as a result. Not a big deal. I have no interest in moderating comments...and have not had any problems with comments in the four years that I've had a blogger account. But, that's just me. I know others have had issues.
Word verification won't stop me from commenting, but it is annoying. And, I have carpal tunnel syndrome. On bad days those extra few keys really feel like huge obstacles!
Thanks for the conversation.
I'm a word verification hater, but I still comment with it. The whole captcha thing gets me though. I've clicked away, then realized my comment hadn't been posted, went back, and didn't want to write it again.
I've had my fair share of spammers, but it's always on older posts, so I've set up comment moderation on posts older than 14 days. I haven't had a problem since. That, and blogger has gotten much better with catching spam for you.
Oh I really can't stand stand WV, there have been times where I have not commented on a blog because of it. There are the odd times like now where I will let it go, or try to at least, but for the most part I avoid it because come on, by now most bloggers are aware how annoying the damn thing is! In your case I can understand I guess, so fair enough.
I'm not a fan of word verification on comments mostly because I have really bad eyesight and it's hard for me to tell which letters are in the pictures they use. However, it doesn't really stop me from commenting on posts.
For my blog I turned off word verification but I now read through any new comments that come through with bloggers new comment system and have deleted some spam from that.
I don't like word verification but it doesn't stop me from commenting. Like you said, when I want to say something, I just go ahead and say it even if I have to go through some other stuff to do it. One of the reasons why I love WordPress is because it doesn't have word verification and it has threaded comments so it allows me to reply to all the comments on my blog.
I don't have word verification, never had it, and I've had so very little spam on my blog. That said, it doesn't put me off commenting! (When I have the time.)
I sometimes have real problems posting comments on blogs with word verification not so much because I can't be bothered to type the word in but because a lot of the time the box doesn't load properly on my computer & it takes me 5 or 6 attempts before I can even see it!
I don't have wv on my blog but I moderate comments on posts that are older than 2 weeks. I'm actually thinking of removing the moderation & only allowing registered users to comment as I think all of the spam I get comes from anonymous users. I have found that the new blogger spam catcher picks up 99% of the spam now anyway, I hardly ever have to delete a comment that slipped through.
I'm fine with word verification like the one you have on your blog - it's simple and takes like 5 sec. I HATE the ones where I can't tell what the words are and have to do the audio thing as a result. It never keeps me from commenting, but there are some design flaws there if the word isn't readable.
We use wordpress for our blog and the spam filter we use is pretty great. And once we've ok'ed someone's first comment, any future comments are accepted without moderation from us. Love that.
I don't mind word vertification when commenting on other people's blogs but I don't have it on my own blog. Whenever someone comments on my blog an automatic email is sent to my inbox so if I see its from a spammer then I can go to blogger to delete it.
Yes word verification is a pain and I have been blogging over a year and have never used it... I have also never had spam so I guess I am lucky that way.
I do try to comment on all blog posts I read.. Its funny I was just thinking about this.. I do a feature called Author Spotlight where I do an author interview, Usually I pair it with a giveaway of that authors book but this time I did not... and no comments. I blog because I love it but it is nice to get comments and I felt a bit disappointed that not one person commented.
I think that if you are going to take the time to read the posts that bloggers work so hard to produce, then take the extra minute to let them know what you think.. It really makes a difference!!!
So needless to say, word verification or not, I try to comment when ever I can!
XOXO
Steph
Word verification does slow down the process of commenting (I really loathe it) but it does not hinder my leaving comments or not.
On our blog, new commenters have to get approval, but once approved they can leave comments freely that will post automatically.
I'm okay with word verification, I don't hate it with the intensity some bloggers do.
That said, I do comment on many blogs, first I comment on blogs that comment on mine, then I read my regular blogs and then some other blogs and comment if I feel like I have something to say. And it has to be done in a limited amount of time. so sometimes, WV is a problem, sometime I'll skip but not always.
wordpress is good where as spam is considered. Most of it is automatically filtered.
Great post! I agree that it shouldn't matter. I will comment either way as it doesn't really bother me. I have just recently turned off my word verification after reading people don't like but it I get spam it is going back on.
I prefer if word verfication is on that it is in the same window (like yours) so you don't accidentaly close it without knowing.
Hi. I love comments. And I really feel like I need to leave comments on all my favourite blogs just to let that person know that I appreciate what they're doing and how much effort they put into their blogs. Because of lack of time I often do marathon blog-reading and leave some poor blogger 10 comments on their latest 2 weeks of blog posts. I hope that isn't weird for anyone, but it makes me feel bad when I don't leave comments.
I'm pretty sure all the comments I leave doesn't equal more comments for MY blog posts but that's OK too. I don't give to recieve (mostly. It would be nice sometimes though. Though I do prefer it when people just want to leave a comment rather than feelinglike they should)
I hate word verification. I groan audibly every time I see it. What's worse? The ninja-word verification, that pops up out of nowhere AFTER I leave my comment. Once I hit 'send' I'm usually moving on to the next post and I miss those things altogether.
I don't have word verification on my blog, but I approve comments after a certain period of time. The odd spam comment comes along occasionally, but it's not too much of a headache.
(As much as I dislike word verification, I do sort of like when it's an actual word - word verification for this comment? 'atone')
I don't have word verification on my blog - I haven't been spammed yet so I haven't bothered.
It doesn't stop me from commenting on others' blogs, and like other commenters, I am occasionally amused by the words.
I've been blogging for 8 years now as I had a personal blog before I started book blogging. I've found that in the last year Blogger has got a lot better at pulling spam comments out. What works for me, as a verification hater, is the comment approval system. I found that most spam comments I received were left on very old posts and were a right pain to find and delete. Now I have my blog set to approve all comments on posts OVER 14 days old. It doesn't inconvenience the reader, I only receive the occasional comment to approve as most readers comment on new posts and makes it easy peasy to track the spam and delete it. Mind you I've not had a spam for ages now anyway.
Ooh nice. Just thought I'd let you know the word verification is 'urinal' Pmsl!
I'm not a huge fan of word verification, but I still comment when I want to. I don't have it on my own, but only the odd spam message gets through. I don't approve comments, but I get email notifications when someone comments, so I know straight away when someone has spammed and can deal with it accordingly. I find that works for me.
I dislike word verification but if it's used I like it to be up front like yours. The worst ones are the ones that pop up after you click submit. I've had it happen a few times I comment, submit, then close the window after it reloads only to see I missed the word verification that showed up. In those cases I rarely retype my comment and move on.
I don't use word verification and most comments post automatically unless my spam filter tags it. I do get email for every comment so if it's spam I can mark them. For me this works since I don't get all that many comments.
Again, thanks to eveyone for sharing your thoughts. I'm leaning more towards switching to approving all comments now. If I try that for a while, and I'm finding that blogger is catching all the spam, maybe I'll relax it a little again or try limiting approval top older posts but keeping the word verification off.
It's really interesting to hear that not only does wv put a few people off commenting simply because it's annoying, but that others have particular problems with it. I guess if you have carpal tunnel or your pc doesn't load that quickly, it's even more of a pain.
Oh, and The Slowest Bookworm - that's *hilarious*. And kinda gross. :D
I don't like word verification but to be honest it doesn't make a lot of difference to me, just a few seconds. Like some have said before me, I'd rather fill in the word verification at the same time as writing the comment than have the "ninja" one pop up after submission. It doesn't bother me, but I do feel a little bit relieved when I don't have to type those few letters. I've removed word verification from my blog after reading a few rants and I've not had any trouble with spam.
Great discussion! I don't like wv when it pops up after the fact or won't load properly on my PC. I haven't had any trouble with spammers since I removed the anonymous posting option (knock wood), but understand why others use it.
Word verification doesn't stop me from commenting (though it can be a pain when you get it wrong on the 4th attempt lol).
Like others if it's used I prefer it on the same page as I comment (I have been known to close the window before the second stage pops up).
